Today, Sunday, I arranged for rest and  reading the Bible and other Christian materials. I also prepared prayer letters received from Christian Library International to send to prisoners who are ministry prayer patners. Do you have special ways to follow God’s command to take a day of rest?

  1. Last week I started writing a daily log of my activities, but when I did yesterday’s (Sunday), I decided to take a rest from recording my day, and instead copied a psalm onto my log sheet. I wrote out Psalm 46 by hand, and it helped me focus on its meaning more than if I had read the psalm quickly, without the act of writing it. It was a nice way to end the day.

    My youngest four children and I try to take one day of rest per week from screens, although it is not on Sunday we do this. However, my husband recently suggested that we could fast from media on Sundays (instead of or in addition to our current media-free day), and I kind of like that idea.

    Also, I don’t require my piano students (which includes my daughter) to practice on Sundays, though they are free to do so if they choose. (I sometimes choose to practice on Sundays, too, for instance, when I am preparing for an upcoming performance.)

    It is nice to have the Sabbath be a different kind of day from the usual, but how one defines and applies the term “rest” varies from individual to individual, and that’s OK. Our liberty in Christ will show itself in different actions (or rest from action) from believer to believer. Even worship services aren’t always on the same day, so Thursday might be my Sabbath some weeks!

  2. Thanks, 6 Arrows, for sharing how you observe a day of rest. I like the media fast idea, too. So much of our lives are geared to the screen, and although it can certainly be for good purposes, we miss a lot by not seeing what else is happening outside that rectangular area of focus (whether cell phone display or a larger screen).

    Are you thinking of turning your daily log into a blog? It sounds like a great accountability tool for homeschoolers. I think the Arrows and your music students could follow your lead in doing that for themselves. Copying a Psalm on Sunday sounds like an effective exercise, too.

    Sometime in the future I would like to have you do a guest blog post for me about the Christian worldview on music. You have expertise in that area, and I always appreciate your perspective. Think about it, and let me know if you’d be interested.

  3. Thank you for your reply, Janice. I am humbled that you would be interested in me guest-posting on Christian worldview regarding music. Although I don’t believe my husband would want me to start a blog of my own, I do think doing a guest post would be a very feasible idea. I will certainly think and pray about it, and get back to you about that possibility, Janice.

  5. Just to let you know I haven’t forgotten about your request, Janice. I am still pondering and praying.

    I had a musical performance last weekend, and will play a duet in church with my daughter next week. Then I’ll be playing in a Christmas concert next month, and I am hoping that maybe participating in those performances will help me formulate some thoughts on the Christian worldview of music. I am drawing a blank right now. Perhaps once the busyness of this season ends, I will be able to collect my thoughts and write.

    It might be several more weeks before you hear from me on this, but, rest assured, I WILL let you know whether I can or can’t guest post. 🙂

        Janice, I’ve thought (and prayed) more about the guest post idea on the Christian worldview of music. As much as I love the idea, and am challenged (in a good way!) by it, I believe that the Lord is not calling me in that particular direction at this time. My plate is quite full in this season of life, with family obligations (including homeschooling, of course), piano teaching, and performing locally. Writing well is not something that comes easily to me, and I would want to do justice to an important topic like this. I just don’t have the time to give the subject effective treatment, and, at the same time, fulfill my other duties.

        So I am sorry to say I have to decline your thoughtful offer. I do wish you well with your blogging, and I thank you for the work you are doing here on your blog.
